One voice for California’s high schools

What the Coalition does

As a 501(c)(4) organization, the Coalition is dedicated to advocacy and lobbying in support of California’s high school students. It brings together the leaders responsible for the state’s high schools to identify shared priorities, examine legislation, and speak with one voice on the issues that matter most to secondary education.

Foundation

The premise of the Coalition is that high schools face unique challenges and need a structure to share experiences and also develop an organized advocacy voice in Sacramento about state legislation, budget priorities, and implementation issues. In addition, it is clear that high school superintendents feel they will benefit from having a group focused on discussing and sharing ideas on high school issues.

Why districts are joining

School districts across the state are joining the California High School Coalition in order to:

• Increase awareness of the distinct challenges that face high schools.
• Advocate for policies and funding priorities that will help high school students successfully graduate and transition to college and careers.
• Meet two times per year in person to build relationships and identify common challenges.

Twice a year, the people who run California’s high schools sit down together

Each leadership group meets to look hard at what’s working, surface the challenges that land only on high schools, and read the legislation headed for California’s campuses. Leaders leave with a wider network and answers they can put to work at home — then bring the next set of questions back to the table.
